PLN Bangladesh solar: Impressive 495MW deal is essential

Indonesia’s PLN Enters Bangladesh Solar Market with 495MW Project

DHAKA, Bangladesh – Indonesia’s state-owned electricity company, through its subsidiary PT PLN Indonesia Power, has officially entered the Bangladeshi renewable energy market by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore the development of a 495-megawatt (MW) solar power project.

The agreement, signed on May 13 with Bangladeshi conglomerate Bay Group, marks a significant step in PLN’s international expansion and its first venture into Bangladesh. The partnership specifically involves Bay Group’s subsidiary, Copenhagen Urban Solar Parks BD Ltd (CUSP), and positions PLN Indonesia Power to participate in Bangladesh’s growing clean energy sector.

Bernadus Sudarmanta, CEO of PLN Indonesia Power, emphasized the strategic importance of the collaboration. “This is our first project in Bangladesh… a strategic step to strengthen our position in the global market,” Sudarmanta stated. The initiative is seen as a key move to bolster PLN’s renewable energy business while contributing to the global energy transition.

This collaboration aligns directly with the development plans of the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB), which has identified 10 potential locations for large-scale solar power generation. The MoU serves as an “initial step” for the two companies to jointly pursue opportunities within this national framework, aiming to support Bangladesh’s clean energy targets and reduce carbon emissions.

The move highlights a growing trend of cross-border energy partnerships and is a critical part of the wider Southeast Asia carbon transition. For PLN, this international project complements its ambitious domestic goals, which include a large-scale Indonesia solar project tender, showcasing a comprehensive strategy to become a major player in the regional renewable energy landscape.

The partnership between PLN Indonesia Power and Bay Group represents a fusion of Indonesian power generation expertise with local Bangladeshi market knowledge, setting the stage for a substantial contribution to sustainable energy development in the region.
