Machines
We already offered some figures for the costs of the machines in Llesson 01.
Here's a quick recap:
20 MW: approximately €560.000
100 MW: approximately €3.800.000
800 MW: approximately €23.600.000
As mentioned before, these prices are only rough estimates. You could set up a production line for half of this amount or double, depending on your level of automation and the details of your production line!
Installation:
Most installation costs should be included in the prices of machines. If not, you must add these costs to your investment total.
Packing:
Sometimes offers do not include packing. In that case, you must take care of the packing by yourself. We suggest budgeting 3-5% of the total costs of machines for packing.
Transportation:
Normally transportation costs are not included in machinery offers. The reason is simple: every country will have a different price. If you want to calculate this cost, ask your delivery company for the total price of 40-foot containers and ask a transportation company to make an offer.

Factory
The factory costs include not only the buildings but also:
- The land for the building
- Media supply
The media supply in particular must be calculated very carefully! Some things to keep in mind are:
- Fire protection
- Compressed air
- Exhaust
Our suggestion is to make a complete plan for the factory that includes all this information before making the investment plan.
Our tip: it’s better to rent rather than buy a building in the beginning! You will save money and have more flexibility if you want to expand your building later.
Cost estimates:
Below we give some ideas about the costs of a completely new building. You will have to pay for these costs if you want to buy the land and make a completely new building, including all the media supply.
Attention: Of course, you must do the calculations by yourself to get a reliable answer. The following costs are based on German prices for land and construction:
20 MW: about €560.000
100 MW: about €3.800.000
800 MW: about €23.600.000

Pre-Financing
At the beginning of production, you must take care of financing for the following things:
- Initial materials
- Losses from ramp up
Initial materials:
Before starting production, you need a stock of materials to produce. First you must buy these materials and make the panels with them, and only then will you be able to sell the panels to your customers. The time gap between these steps must be financed. Depending on your payment conditions (your down payment, or the credit you give to your customers) this can time gap can equal 1-3 months of your production capacity.
Ramp up losses:
You will not be able to start your production with 100% of your production capacity. The ramp up phase until you reach 90% of your capacity or more can last half a year or longer.
Typical production capacities are:
2 % in the first month
7 % in the second month
17 % in the third month
and so on.
You can imagine that in the first 3 months you will not make any profit. You will incur losses because of all the operating costs.
Cost estimates:
The costs for the beginning of your production line are not 100% linear with your production capacity. With a very small line, you can ramp up faster (due to having fewer people to train) and you can keep fewer materials in stock much because smaller companies produce mostly for valid orders.
The bigger your production capacity, the more people you must train and the longer the ramp up phase will be.
Also, you will require more stock because there will be times when you produce for stock and sell the panels later.
To get an idea about the costs of financing, consider the following estimations:
20 MW: about €560.000
100 MW: about €3.800.000
800 MW: about €23.600.000
Summary
Total investment for a solar module production line:
20 MW
Machines: €300.000
Factory: €100.000
Pre-financing: €160.000
Sum: €560.000
100 MW
Machines: €1.500.000
Factory: €1.500.000
Pre-financing: €800.000
Sum: €3.800.000
800 MW
Machines: €11.000.000
Factory: €6.000.000
Pre-financing: €6.600.000
Sum: €23.600.000

I wish to have a good knowledge of this,l’m a Nigeria
That’s great information, very helpful
Thank you for the information, but please I will like to ask, as someone who just want to start, which would you advice me to go for first. Should it be the 5MW, 30MW, 100MW
Please send us an email with your request: info@jvgthoma.de
Interesting,my hopes are kindled.
Please I need more explanation on how to start small company on the solar, please if possible a proposal for beingner. I will be happy if you can make one for me to use. I can translate the cost in compear with Nigeria price
You can ask an offer by mail: info@jvgthoma.de
I have seen the tutorial and come up with the idea that the ideal factory to start the project is a 30 W one.
This will be able to satisfy the needs of the region and other counties where the national grid of electricity does not reach.
What is the best line will depend on:
– Your budget
– The size of your market
– Your orders
If you need help with it please contact us: info@jvgthoma.de
How do you measure the 5MW ? Is this the power consumed during production ?
This is the nominal power of all panels coming out of the factory in one year
Thank you very well explained and to the point
Good leads for investment planning thanks again guys. This will help us to make an analytic decision.
I’m interested in this

I think it will be helpfull for teaching for development project plan in our society
Assuming I start with 5MW, how long will it take ROI and also allow me progress to 30MW?
return will be about 2 years.
Very informative. I want to learn more before invest. If you share some more informative videos like production of cell, process guidelines etc. This could be helpful for us before taking any decision.
One more thing , as of my thinking i would like to become expert in solar cell before making decision. Like process , cost of material, machine electricity power, and some more details so we can calculate the cost of solar cell,
Hi, this can be done with our premium course: https://www.pvknowhow.com/business-plan-details/
This have been my dream come true and here I’m, today. I am interested and ready to pit in my Best in it.
Thank you very much
Welcome!
Hi, thank you for your kind information, we are from south India, we are ready to start the manufacturing, please send the details in indian money value, and send the photos of the machines, delivery to Chennai port.
Thanks, make a request on our website, you can ask for an offer.
Comment faire passer la commande et procéder à la transaction?
Impressive!. I am now better informed as a guide towards investing in solar production
What percentage is your component Investment for an automated Production? Sorry if I didn’t pick this up?
1a) Is there availability of finance by any international financial institution in form of project finance
b) Does your company have any financial arrangement with such an institution?Or can it be arranged? How?
2) Is the 1st option (5MW) financially profitable and viable venture that can be scaled to 30MW, 100MW etc? In how many years?
what should be the size of facility where the production can be in a smooth process and also some storage area
This is wonderful… And I hope to work with you soon.
Please do the pre financing includes raw materials needed for the factory?
The tutorial is highly commendable it is very rear to be missed
I like all the teachers
The Lessons are quite revealing but the start up capital is what I want to know if I can be finance for with a refund as progress on the business. And with the demand for solar around my locality, it will not take long to recover the cost and make profit. Thank u sir for this eye opening adventure.
Thank you for good learnt me I will hope confidently do to start this project thank you
Bonne formation
Enjoyable!
What support can you give to apprentice for the huge project
