Frontier SA Builds 30 Solar-Powered Boreholes in the DRC

In a significant step towards sustainable community development, Frontier SA, a subsidiary of ERG Africa, has completed and handed over 30 solar-powered boreholes to six communities within the Sakania territory of the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s Haut-Katanga province. This initiative directly addresses a critical need for reliable access to clean drinking water for thousands of residents in a region with limited infrastructure.

The project leverages solar power to ensure a consistent water supply, bypassing the challenges of an unreliable electrical grid. According to Nicolas Treand, CEO of ERG Africa, the effort is a core part of the company’s strategic vision. “Supporting this initiative for improved access to drinking water aligns perfectly with ERG Africa’s mission to develop impactful projects that sustainably benefit local populations,” he stated.

A Collaborative Funding and Governance Model for Frontier SA Builds 30 Solar-Powered Boreholes in the DRC

A central element of this project’s success is its unique community-centric governance model, managed through the DOT-Frontier fund. This mechanism ensures that development projects are not imposed on communities but are chosen by them. From 2018 to 2023, Frontier SA disbursed USD 5.88 million into this fund from a total provision of USD 9.27 million, empowering local stakeholders to identify their most pressing needs across sectors like health, education, and infrastructure.

Patient Kabela, Senior Social Manager at Frontier SA, highlighted the importance of this collaborative approach. “By involving various local communities in the project selection process, we foster ownership and ensure the sustainability of achievements which are crucial for enduring benefits to current and future generations,” Kabela explained. This transparent process is overseen by a specialized 12-member body, which includes representatives from local communities, government entities, and Frontier SA, with additional regulatory supervision from the Ministries of Mines and Social Affairs.

Delivering on Commitments for a Brighter Future

The successful implementation of the borehole project has strengthened the relationship between the company and the communities it serves. Eric Kitambala Mabel, President of DOT-Frontier, affirmed the positive partnership, noting, “The relationship between DOT-Frontier and Frontier SA is positive, with the latter fulfilling its commitments and obligations.”

This community development program is one of ten active projects planned for 2024, demonstrating a sustained commitment to corporate social responsibility in the region. As Frontier SA continues to invest in essential infrastructure driven by community input, it is helping to build a more resilient and prosperous future for the people of Sakania.
