Australia Initiates Record-Breaking 6GW Solar Tender

The Australian government is launching its largest-ever single procurement for renewable energy, a landmark 6 GW tender designed to accelerate the nation’s transition from fossil fuels. As a cornerstone of the expanded Capacity Investment Scheme (CIS), this initiative aims to secure a massive injection of new wind and solar projects into the National Electricity Market (NEM) to replace retiring coal-fired power stations.

This historic tender will allocate its substantial Capacity across several states, with New South Wales (NSW) set to receive the largest share at 2.2 GW. The procurement marks a significant federal and state collaboration, with the Albanese and NSW governments establishing a unified tender process that integrates both the national CIS and the state’s own energy roadmap.

The tender is the first of several planned auctions to be held approximately every six months until 2027. It is a critical component of the broader CIS ambition to deliver 32 GW of new capacity by 2030, which includes 23 GW of renewable energy generation and 9 GW of dispatchable storage. These efforts are directly aligned with Australia’s national target to achieve 82% renewable electricity by the end of the decade.

Federal Minister for Climate Change and Energy, Chris Bowen, emphasized that the plan provides the market with long-term confidence. “We store water so that it is always available when we need it; our energy plan accomplishes the same thing for dependable renewables,” Bowen stated, underscoring the government’s strategy to ensure grid stability. “The rain doesn’t always fall, but we always have water on tap.”

This major investment push comes after a challenging period for the large-scale solar sector, which saw a decline in projects reaching financial close in 2023. However, the government’s commitment, coupled with a new strategy to bolster domestic clean energy manufacturing, is expected to invigorate the market. The sheer scale of the 6 GW tender is poised to drive significant investment and play a pivotal role in securing Australia’s clean energy future.
