Global automotive distributor Inchcape has positioned itself as a sustainability leader within Brunei’s automotive industry by becoming the first in the sector to adopt solar power for its operations. This landmark move, part of the company’s long-term global strategy to reduce emissions, involves the activation of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems across its premier Lexus and Toyota showrooms.
The initiative is a tangible result of Inchcape’s global commitment to environmental responsibility, which includes science-based targets for a 46% reduction in scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030, as outlined in earlier corporate planning. The project features a total of 368 high-efficiency solar panels, with 224 installed at the Toyota Showroom & Service Centre in Beribi and another 144 panels at the Lexus Showroom & Service Centre in Gadong. This deployment is expected to cut carbon dioxide emissions by an estimated 100 to 156 metric tons each year.
A Strategic Partnership for Brunei solar energy: Inchcape’s Stunning 2024 Showroom Shift
To execute this vision, Inchcape Brunei has formed a strategic partnership with local solar provider Starwell Energy Sdn Bhd through a power purchase agreement (PPA). Under the terms of this long-term arrangement, Starwell Energy assumes full responsibility for the ownership, operation, and maintenance of the solar arrays. This model provides Inchcape with clean, renewable electricity without the need for significant upfront capital investment, a common challenge detailed in solar plant cost analyses.
This approach mirrors a growing global trend in the commercial sector, where businesses are entering into similar renewable energy deals to achieve sustainability targets. The success of such projects hinges on the technology itself, which begins with a complex solar panel production journey using carefully selected photovoltaic raw materials.
Supporting Brunei’s National Vision
Inchcape’s solar adoption provides powerful private-sector support for Brunei’s national sustainability agenda, particularly Wawasan Brunei 2035, which targets a 10% renewable energy share in the country’s power mix. This corporate initiative complements the nation’s broader strategy as Brunei expands its solar portfolio with large-scale utility projects.
At a commemorative event, Inchcape’s Managing Director, Patrick Lee, highlighted the project’s dual importance. “This initiative is in alignment with Inchcape’s global commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainability,” he stated. “By reducing our carbon footprint, we are contributing to a cleaner and greener future while supporting the Brunei Vision 2035 goal.”
Muhd Clovien Abdullah Timpoh, Vice President of Inchcape Brunei, echoed this sentiment, calling the solar integration a significant milestone in promoting environmental stewardship among employees and customers. A deeper understanding of the fundamentals of solar manufacturing and the sophisticated machinery involved offers greater appreciation for such technological deployments.
