In a significant move toward energy independence, Cape Verde inaugurated its largest-ever photovoltaic power plant on September 12, 2024. Located in Santa Maria on Sal Island, the new 5 MW facility represents a major milestone in the nation’s strategy to reduce its reliance on imported fossil fuels and stabilize electricity prices for its citizens.
A Milestone as Cape Verde Launches Biggest Photovoltaic Plant
Developed by the Cape Verdean company Aguas de Ponta Preta and operated by the Spanish firm Impulso Energía, the plant spans eight hectares and boasts a peak capacity of 6 MWp. It is projected to generate 10.5 GWh of clean electricity annually. This project is the first of nine new solar arrays planned by the government, signaling a determined push to expand the country’s renewable energy portfolio and secure a sustainable energy future.
Driving Down Costs After Cape Verde Launches Biggest Photovoltaic Plant
A key benefit of this strategic shift to solar energy is the anticipated reduction in energy costs. The Ministry of Energy has stated, “When we surpass 50% renewable energy penetration, we will begin to see the full effects of reduced external impact on energy prices.” The project’s economic viability is underscored by a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, and Energy. Under this agreement, Norberto Lariba, Chairman of Aguas de Ponta Preta, announced that the electricity will be sold for less than 5 Cape Verdean escudos (€0.045) per kWh for the first 15 years, positioning it as one of the most affordable power sources in the nation.
On Track After Cape Verde Launches Biggest Photovoltaic Plant
The Sal Island facility is crucial for achieving Cape Verde’s ambitious climate targets, which aim for 30% renewable energy penetration by 2026 and over 50% by 2030. The new plant adds significantly to the 26 MW of installed solar capacity the country had at the end of 2023. By championing projects like this landmark photovoltaic plant, Cape Verde is not only progressing toward its national goals but also establishing itself as a proactive leader in the global transition to clean and sustainable energy.
