Cuba Solar Energy Initiative: 326 Solar Kits Installed in Response to Electricity Shortages
Cuba’s Matanzas province has installed 87 solar kits this year as part of a provincial program to deploy 326 photovoltaic systems. These systems are designated for isolated homes and essential facilities, including funeral homes, polyclinics, and nursing homes.
The initiative responds to severe electricity shortages that have affected up to 70% of Cuba concurrently, leading to prolonged blackouts and fuel shortages. According to reports, these outages have severely impacted daily life on the island.
The solar kits installed in Matanzas are not large-grid replacements. For instance, the system at the funeral home is rated at 2 kW with 6.7 kWh of battery storage, designed to provide basic energy survival during outages. Some recipients may have expectations exceeding the system’s capabilities.
This move to solar power aligns with broader efforts to manage chronic energy scarcity that has plagued Cuba, spotlighting the urgent need for alternative energy solutions. Recent reports indicate that the island’s energy grid is under constant strain, underscoring the necessity for local and sustainable energy sources.
