Cuba solar panels: Japan’s stunning aid for hospitals
In a significant humanitarian initiative, the Government of Japan has committed a grant of approximately 1 billion yen (about $6.5 million USD) to fortify Cuba’s healthcare infrastructure with renewable energy. The aid is a direct response to the nation’s severe energy crisis, which has been intensified by fuel shortages and U.S. sanctions, leading to frequent and debilitating power outages that threaten patient care.
The project, announced by Japan’s Foreign Ministry, will be implemented over a two-year period in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). It aims to guarantee a stable power supply for ten critical hospitals across the island, ensuring that essential medical services can continue without interruption. Four of the selected facilities are in the capital, Havana, with the remaining six located in other provinces.
This targeted aid will equip each hospital with a comprehensive solar energy system, including photovoltaic panels for electricity generation and storage batteries to provide reliable power around the clock. By securing an independent energy source, these hospitals can safeguard vital functions such as operating life-support machines, powering surgical equipment, and refrigerating essential medicines, regardless of the stability of the national grid.
The UNDP will oversee the project’s entire lifecycle, from initial technical assessments and system design to the procurement and installation of the equipment. A crucial component of the initiative is providing training for local hospital staff on the operation and maintenance of the new solar systems. This focus on capacity building is designed to ensure the long-term sustainability and effectiveness of Japan’s investment in Cuba’s public health resilience.
