E.ON Energie Seals PPA With Webasto for €1M Solar Project

E.ON Energie Romania has completed a photovoltaic (PV) plant for Webasto Romania, a project strengthening the company’s commitment to green energy and expanding its portfolio of power purchase agreements (PPAs) with industrial clients.

E.ON Energie Romania Expands Solar Investments

E.ON Energie Romania—a subsidiary of Germany’s E.ON Group—has financed and built a 1,545.6 kWp solar power plant for Webasto Romania at its factory in Zimandu Nou, Arad County, with a total investment of €1 million.

The solar installation will generate around 1,530 MWh of renewable energy each year, covering more than 23% of Webasto Romania’s electricity demand. Developed under a 15-year PPA, the project ensures a fixed price for the energy supplied.

Claudia Griech, General Manager of E.ON Energie Romania, highlighted the strategic importance of the project. “We want to expand in the PPA market, and our partnership with Webasto is an important step. Through such agreements, we help companies reduce energy price risks while supporting sustainability,” she said.

Koehler Philipp, Director of Webasto Romania, also emphasised the advantages. “The PPA aligns with Webasto’s long-term sustainability goals. A stable price for renewable energy helps us plan effectively and strengthens our environmental commitment,” he said.

Webasto’s Shift to Green Energy

A global supplier of automotive roof systems, Webasto serves several European manufacturers from its Arad facility, which was established in 2008. The company has prioritised green energy solutions to reduce its environmental impact.

Featuring 3,360 high-efficiency PV modules with a capacity of 460 W each, the new solar plant will reduce Webasto Romania’s carbon footprint by approximately 467.74 tonnes of CO₂ annually.

This investment not only enhances the company’s sustainability efforts but also protects it from future fluctuations in electricity prices as Webasto aims to integrate more renewable energy into its operations.

E.ON Energie Romania’s Growing Solar Portfolio

With a strong presence in the non-residential solar sector, E.ON Energie Romania has completed over 392 PV projects with a total investment of €74 million. These projects generate over 104 GWh of solar energy annually and have significantly reduced carbon emissions in the industrial sector. The firm serves around 3.5 million customers across Romania, including residential clients, businesses, and municipalities.

Positioning itself as a key player in Romania’s energy transition, E.ON Energie Romania helps businesses reduce their carbon footprint by financing, developing, and operating renewable energy projects.

In December, Hungary’s MVM Group agreed to acquire E.ON Energie Romania and E.ON Asist Complet as part of a broader transaction with the German parent company. Romania’s energy ministry has since referred the acquisition to the Commission for the Examination of Foreign Direct Investments.

Given MVM Group’s extensive trade relations with Russia’s Gazprom and Rosatom, Romanian authorities are assessing potential risks linked to the takeover. The final approval will determine whether MVM gains full control over E.ON Energie Romania.

The Future of Solar PPAs in Romania

PPAs are becoming a preferred option for industrial energy consumers in Romania, offering companies like Webasto cost stability and sustainability improvements. At the same time, energy providers such as E.ON Energie Romania see these agreements as a reliable business model.

By securing long-term energy contracts, businesses can reduce their exposure to volatile electricity markets, while the fixed pricing structure allows for better financial planning. This approach also aligns with Romania’s renewable energy targets.

As E.ON Energie Romania continues to expand its green energy portfolio, its growing number of PPA-based solar projects reflects an increasing demand for clean energy solutions. The partnership with Webasto exemplifies how industrial consumers are embracing solar power.

The future of Romania’s energy market will depend on sustainable investments. More companies are expected to adopt PPAs as they transition to renewable energy, and E.ON Energie Romania remains a key player in this evolving landscape.
