Germany’s commitment to expanding its solar capacity was underscored in its latest tender, which saw intense competition drive down costs. The Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur) confirmed the results of the auction with a bid deadline of December 1, 2024, awarding 2.15 GW of capacity across 242 projects. The round was heavily oversubscribed, attracting 524 bids that collectively totaled 4.71 GW—more than double the tendered volume.
Intense Competition After Germany Awards 2.15 GW Solar Projects in New Auction
The overwhelming investor interest marks the fifth consecutive solar tender where submitted bids surpassed the 4 GW mark, signaling a robust and competitive landscape. This fierce competition had a direct impact on the financial support required, pushing the volume-weighted average award price down to 4.76 cents per kWh. This figure represents a six percent decrease from the previous auction’s 5.05 cents per kWh and is the lowest average price recorded since 2019. The successful bids fell within a tight range of 3.88 to 4.95 cents per kWh.
Regional Breakdown and Policy Advancements for Germany Awards 2.15 GW Solar Projects in New Auction
Geographically, Bavaria cemented its leadership role in the nation’s solar expansion, securing the largest share with 120 awards totaling 916 MW. Other states also made significant gains, contributing to a more distributed network of renewable energy generation. Notable awards include Schleswig-Holstein (213 MW), Lower Saxony (192 MW), Baden-Württemberg (176 MW), and Brandenburg (170 MW).
This auction was also the first to incorporate new minimum environmental criteria for solar installations, aiming to enhance the ecological compatibility of new projects. While the recently approved Solar Package I, which increases project size limits to 50 MW, was not yet applicable pending state aid approval, its future implementation is expected to further accelerate growth in Germany’s solar market.
Future Outlook for Germany Awards 2.15 GW Solar Projects in New Auction
The sustained high demand and falling costs are positive indicators for Germany’s energy transition. The results from this tender provide strong momentum as the country works towards its ambitious goal of installing 215 GW of solar power by 2030. The next auction for ground-mounted solar systems is already scheduled for March 1, 2025, where high participation is once again anticipated.
