Impressive CAR solar project: 50 MW plant launched

Global South Utilities, a renewable energy company based in the UAE, has commenced construction on a landmark 50 MW solar power plant in the Central African Republic (CAR). This pioneering project is not only the nation’s first large-scale solar facility but also incorporates a significant battery storage component to ensure a stable and reliable power supply.

First Large-Scale CAR solar project in Central African Republic

In a major step towards energy independence and sustainability, Global South Utilities has broken ground on a 50 MW solar power plant in the Central African Republic. A crucial feature of this development is the inclusion of a 10 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). This technology will allow energy generated during peak sunlight hours to be stored and dispatched during the evening or on overcast days, dramatically improving grid stability and providing consistent power to a nation where energy access has been a significant challenge.

The $100 million project, a substantial investment with a financial structure comparable to a detailed solar panel manufacturing plant cost breakdown, will be completed in two phases. The first 25 MW is scheduled to be operational by the end of 2024, with the second 25 MW phase following by mid-2025. This venture is structured as a public-private partnership (PPP) between the Central African government and Global South Utilities, bolstered by significant financial backing from the World Bank, which is providing a $50 million loan for the plant’s construction.

Habib Al Mulla, CEO of Global South Utilities, described the project as a key milestone in the company’s mission to advance renewable energy in emerging markets. He expressed pride in contributing to this historic initiative and voiced his hope that it would serve as a model for other nations in the region to embrace similar solar-plus-storage solutions.

Global South Utilities’ ambitions in the country don’t stop there. The company is also developing a larger, 100 MW solar power plant in Bangui, CAR’s capital. Slated for completion by 2026, this project will further solidify the country’s renewable energy capacity.
