Mscale Renewable Energy Limited, through its investment in SunTerra Energy (SEJL), has secured a power purchase agreement to build a landmark 80-megawatt solar photovoltaic (PV) plant in Trelawny, Jamaica. The project, which represents a significant Jamaica solar farm investment: Stunning $56M Boost, will sell power to the Jamaica Public Service Company Limited (JPS) under a 20-year contract.

The solar plant is set to be a transformative addition to Jamaica’s energy infrastructure, connecting directly to the national grid. Its electricity will be priced competitively at approximately 5 cents per kilowatt-hour (US$0.05/kWh). John Azar, chairman of Mscale, noted that the project is a significant milestone for the company, which has been planning a major solar facility for over a decade.
This Jamaica Solar Farm: 2024 Investment Unveiled will be one of the largest private sector-led solar power initiatives in the Caribbean, outside of the Dominican Republic. Once operational, the 80-megawatt plant is expected to supply roughly 12% of Jamaica’s total electricity demand, powering approximately 80,000 homes and reducing annual carbon emissions by an estimated 125,000 tonnes. Azar emphasized that the cost of solar energy is far lower than that of fossil fuels, which currently account for over 80% of the country’s energy generation, a critical detail highlighted in the broader Jamaica Solar Panel Manufacturing Report.
Azar also noted that the project will establish Mscale as a leader in the Caribbean’s renewable energy market. The company is already considering future projects, including a potential 200-megawatt solar plant in Jamaica and other initiatives across the region.
Job Creation and Local Manufacturing Ambitions: Jamaica solar plant jobs
The construction of the solar plant is expected to create approximately 600 jobs, with a commitment to filling 80% of those positions with Jamaican workers. While Mscale will import key components like solar panels and steel, it plans to source other materials locally whenever possible.
Looking further ahead, Azar mentioned that the company is exploring the possibility of establishing a local manufacturing facility for solar panels, batteries, and other renewable energy components. Such a move would require a deep understanding of the basics of solar panel manufacturing and the complete solar panel manufacturing process. A local plant would need a steady supply of solar panel raw materials and sophisticated solar panel manufacturing machines. To assess viability, the company would also analyze the solar panel manufacturing plant cost breakdown and could potentially leverage Jamaica SEZ incentives for solar manufacturing.
According to Mscale CEO Ugo Ikemba, construction is set to begin in January, with the plant expected to be completed within 18-24 months. Mscale has successfully secured financing for the project and plans to finalize all details in the coming months.
