A new collaboration is expanding clean energy access for California businesses, as commercial solar loan platform Sunstone Credit has announced a $5 million financing deal with King Energy, a provider of energy solutions for multi-tenant commercial properties. The investment supports a 2.8 MW portfolio of solar projects that will deliver renewable energy to over 60 commercial tenants across seven retail centers.
The initiative is specifically designed to empower businesses often excluded from the benefits of solar power. The projects serve a diverse mix of tenants—from national chains to local establishments like restaurants, salons, and coffee shops—with a significant number located in low- and medium-income communities. “This project is unique because it makes solar energy accessible to businesses that might otherwise be unable to afford it,” explained Josh Goldberg, Sunstone Credit’s co-founder and CEO. He added that the financing partnership helps to “democratize access to solar while driving a clean, green future for all.”
King Energy’s model leverages technology to streamline the transition. Using virtual net metering for power distribution, the company also deploys its proprietary King Energy OneBill software to consolidate utility and solar charges into a single payment, offering tenants discounted clean energy. “Making solar simple and financially beneficial for our customers is our main goal,” said John Witchel, CEO of King Energy. “Working with Sunstone to finance this project helped us implement solar quickly, accelerating cost savings and renewable energy benefits almost immediately.”
The portfolio of solar power systems spans several California locations, including Reedley, Stockton, San Mateo, Bakersfield, and Half Moon Bay. These installations are projected to supply between 20% and 80% of the energy needs at each property. This project contributes to King Energy’s broader mission of deploying solar across commercial rooftops, adding to its existing management of over 170 energy programs that cover more than 20 million square feet of tenant space.
