In a significant move to bolster Germany’s renewable energy capacity, global solar developer Lightsource bp has formally partnered with local developer Kajoni Energie. The agreement, signed on August 20, 2024, establishes a collaboration to co-develop a portfolio of over 500MWp of utility-scale solar projects across the country.
Strategic Development as Lightsource bp Partners Kajoni on 500MW German Solar Projects
The partnership outlines a clear division of responsibilities designed to streamline development over the next two to three years. Kajoni Energie will leverage its local expertise to identify and secure suitable project sites, which must be at least 20 hectares in size. The German developer will also manage the licensing and permitting process to bring each project to a ready-to-build (RTB) status. At that stage, Lightsource bp, a solar and battery storage developer owned by BP, will assume full ownership to commence construction.

Stephan Jeznita, Head of Business Development for Lightsource bp Germany, emphasized the value of local collaboration. “Kajoni is deeply rooted in Lower Saxony, a region with very high potential for solar power,” he noted. “We are ambitious in growing the German market, and local partners like Kajoni are an ideal addition to our own greenfield development operations across Germany.” This joint venture is a key component of Lightsource bp’s strategy to establish a leading presence in the German solar market, which it entered in 2023.
Supporting Europe’s Clean Energy Transition with Lightsource bp Partners Kajoni on 500MW German Solar Projects
This 500MW pipeline aligns directly with Germany’s aggressive climate targets, which call for 80% of the nation’s electricity to come from renewable sources by 2030. Large-scale collaborations are critical for achieving this goal and accelerating the country’s shift away from fossil fuels. The growing importance of solar power is a cornerstone of this transition.
The German initiative is part of Lightsource bp’s broader expansion across Europe. The company has been active in Poland since 2020 and recently began commercial operations at a 40MW solar facility there. By combining its global financing and construction capabilities with Kajoni’s regional development skills, Lightsource bp is well-positioned to make a substantial contribution to Germany’s renewable energy landscape and help secure a more sustainable energy future for the region.
