Swedish Solar Firm Midsummer to Commission New CIGS Factory in 2026
The European solar manufacturing landscape is set for a significant boost as Swedish thin-film solar specialist, Midsummer, prepares to commission a new large-scale factory in its home country. The company has announced that its 200 MW facility in Flen, Sweden, is expected to begin commissioning later in 2026, marking a major expansion of its production capabilities for its unique CIGS solar technology.
This development signals a strong commitment to strengthening Europe’s domestic solar supply chain and highlights the growing momentum behind innovative thin-film solar solutions.
A Major Leap with the Midsummer CIGS factory
The new factory, currently under construction in southeastern Sweden, represents a massive increase in Midsummer’s manufacturing output. With a planned capacity of 200 MW, the Flen facility is poised to become a cornerstone of the company’s growth strategy. While commissioning is slated to begin this year, the factory is projected to reach full operational capacity by 2028.
This expansion follows the successful launch of Midsummer’s first large-scale plant outside of Sweden. As reported by PV Magazine, the company recently made its 50 MW facility in Bari, Italy, operational in 2024. The Italian plant, which utilizes Midsummer’s proprietary DUO turnkey manufacturing systems, was established with a €50 million investment, including a €16.5 million grant from the Italian government.

Together with a smaller 5 MW production line at its Stockholm headquarters, the new Flen factory will position Midsummer as a key European producer of advanced CIGS solar panels.
The Midsummer Advantage: CIGS Thin-Film Technology
Midsummer specializes in CIGS (copper-indium-gallium-selenide) thin-film solar cells. Unlike traditional silicon-based solar panels, which are rigid and heavy, CIGS technology allows for the production of solar panels that are lightweight, flexible, and durable.
This makes them an ideal solution for a wide range of applications where conventional panels are not suitable, such as:
* Commercial and industrial metal roofs with low load-bearing capacity.
* Curved or architecturally complex surfaces.
* Historic buildings where aesthetics and minimal structural impact are crucial.
The manufacturing process itself, centered around the company’s Swedish-made DUO system, is designed for high efficiency and scalability. Each compact DUO machine has a production capacity of 5 MW, allowing Midsummer to scale its operations in a modular fashion.
Bolstering European Solar Sovereignty
The establishment of the Flen factory is more than just a corporate milestone; it’s a strategic step towards enhancing Europe’s manufacturing self-sufficiency in the critical renewable energy sector. By expanding its production base within the EU, Midsummer is helping to build a resilient, local supply chain for advanced solar technology.
As the continent pushes forward with its ambitious green transition goals, the availability of domestically produced solar components is paramount. Midsummer’s continued investment in its Swedish and Italian facilities underscores the viability and competitive potential of European solar manufacturing, paving the way for a more secure and sustainable energy future.
