New Solar Modules Cleaner to be Unveiled in Munich

German chemical specialist Emil Otto is set to introduce a new line of four biodegradable cleaning agents for solar panel maintenance at the upcoming Intersolar 2024 exhibition in Munich. The new products, designated EO-SMC-001 through EO-SMC-004, were developed to meet a growing industry need for specialized, environmentally conscious cleaning solutions.

The decision to expand into this sector was driven by direct market feedback. “Our engagement at Intersolar 2023 demonstrated that there is considerable demand for specific cleaning products in this field,” explained Markus Geßner, head of marketing and sales at Emil Otto. “As a result, we decided to develop new items for the next Intersolar and present them in Munich.”

The flagship product, EO-SMC-001, is a ready-to-use, VOC-free cleaning agent. Its moderately alkaline, water-based formula effectively removes acidic and saline dirt without leaving performance-inhibiting residues. With excellent wetting properties, it is suitable for both manual and automated application methods, including spraying and brushing systems. As a biodegradable and non-hazardous solution, it underscores the company’s focus on safety and sustainability.

The product family offers tailored solutions for various types of soiling found on solar panels. The range includes the mildly acidic EO-SMC-002 and the pH-neutral EO-SMC-003, the latter being ideal for sensitive materials and effective against common contaminants like dust, pollen, and road grime. For tougher organic challenges, EO-SMC-004 utilizes an active oxygen formula to eliminate lichens, moss, algae, and certain molds.

This launch addresses a critical aspect of maintaining photovoltaic systems, which are constantly exposed to environmental pollutants. Accumulated grime from soot, bird droppings, and weather can decrease electricity generation by as much as 30%, making regular professional cleaning essential for achieving maximum solar power efficiency and yield.

Environmental compatibility was a guiding principle in the development of the new cleaners. “We prioritised environmental compatibility because many solar panels are located in meadows or lush regions,” Geßner stated. All four products are free of corrosive or flammable additives and can be safely rinsed with water without posing a threat to surrounding flora and fauna.
