The ambitious project to power the Aso Villa with a dedicated solar system is now in its final phase. According to State House Permanent Secretary Temitope Fashedemi, the installation of the solar infrastructure, complete with battery storage, was finished in late 2025. Rigorous performance testing began in December 2025 to ensure the system’s readiness.

Speaking during the Senate’s defense of the 2026 State House budget, Fashedemi expressed optimism for a “full cutover” from the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) by March 2026. The primary goals are to slash high operating costs associated with diesel generators and eliminate the complex’s reliance on the faltering national grid.

A successful pilot program at the State House Medical Centre, which switched to solar power in May 2025, has served as a powerful proof of concept. Since the switch, the medical center has drawn only 3% of its power from the grid and has not used its backup generators at all, demonstrating the viability and efficiency of the new system.

The scale of this undertaking is reflected in its funding. The project was allocated N10 billion in the 2025 budget, with an additional N7 billion proposed in the 2026 Appropriation Bill to see it to completion.
