Marking a significant entry into the U.S. renewable energy landscape, London-based Octopus Energy has acquired two operational solar farms in the PJM Interconnection region from developer Vesper Energy. This initial 100 MW acquisition is the first step in the company’s ambitious plan to inject $2 billion into American clean energy generation projects by 2030.
A Closer Look at the Projects
The deal encompasses two distinct solar assets. The larger of the two, the 80 MW Nestlewood solar farm, covers 610 acres across Clermont and Brown Counties in Ohio and supplies power to a Fortune 100 e-commerce company through a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA). In Pennsylvania, the 20 MW Gaucho solar project is the largest of its kind in the southwestern part of the state. Located across Beaver and Allegheny Counties, its 55,000 solar panels provide clean electricity to the University of Pittsburgh.
Powering Homes and Expanding a Global Portfolio
Together, the Nestlewood and Gaucho facilities generate enough clean electricity to power approximately 20,000 homes annually. This output has a significant environmental impact, equivalent to removing 36,000 gasoline-powered cars from the road each year. Vesper Energy will continue to oversee operations as the asset manager for both sites.
This transaction, managed by Octopus Energy Generation on behalf of its Sky fund, elevates the company’s global solar portfolio to an impressive 2 GW. This is in addition to another 1.7 GW of green energy projects, including onshore and offshore wind farms, that Octopus manages across Europe and Australia.
Greg Jackson, founder and CEO of Octopus Energy, commented on the strategic move. “As we accelerate our renewable energy investments globally, we plan to inject $2 billion into the US clean tech market in the coming years,” he stated. “Green energy is not only the future but also the most economically viable energy source today. By expanding our infrastructure, we aim to expedite the transition to a more affordable and sustainable energy system for all.”
