PNG Government Announces Investment in Solar, Hydro, and Geothermal Energy
PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea – The government of Papua New Guinea has announced a significant strategic pivot towards renewable energy, signaling major new investments in hydro, geothermal, and solar power to build a low-carbon future.
Prime Minister James Marape confirmed the nation is preparing to move decisively away from its reliance on fossil fuels. The initiative is part of a broader energy reform aimed at increasing energy independence and driving sustainable development across the archipelago. According to the Prime Minister, the investment will focus on harnessing PNG’s abundant natural resources, including hydro, geothermal, and solar, as well as exploring wind and ocean energy potential.
A key component of the government’s strategy involves transitioning 16 provinces currently dependent on diesel-generated power to more sustainable renewable sources. This ambitious plan aims to overhaul the nation’s energy infrastructure, reduce operational costs associated with imported fuels, and improve electricity reliability for its citizens. The cost-saving potential of such a switch is significant, as demonstrated by projects in other developing nations. For instance, a recent solar installation at a major airport in Guyana is projected to deliver stunning annual cost cuts, highlighting the economic benefits that often accompany the transition to renewables.
PNG’s move aligns with a growing trend among Pacific island nations to champion clean energy solutions to combat climate change and bolster their economies. This regional shift is gaining momentum, with neighboring countries also securing backing for major renewable projects, such as the recent unique solar power deal inked in the Solomon Islands. By investing in a diverse portfolio of clean energy, PNG aims to position itself as a leader in the region’s green transition.

Beyond electricity generation, the government’s vision extends to the transport sector. Prime Minister Marape noted that a policy is being prepared to support the adoption of electric vehicles and potentially electric maritime transport, further reducing the nation’s carbon footprint.
While the government has not yet detailed the specific community benefit schemes for these projects, investments in renewables often carry significant socio-economic advantages. Similar projects in other regions have successfully implemented models where a large portion of net revenue is reinvested into local communities, sometimes funding access to online schools and other critical development initiatives.
This comprehensive commitment to clean energy marks a pivotal moment for Papua New Guinea, promising to reshape its energy landscape and set a course for a more sustainable and economically resilient future.
