Massachusetts’ renewable energy infrastructure has received a significant boost with the commercial launch of the Cotuit Solar Farm in Sandwich. The project, developed by PureSky Energy, integrates a 4.4 MWdc solar array with a co-located 1.4 MWdc battery energy storage system (BESS), enhancing the local power grid’s capacity and reliability.
Comprised of 11,172 high-efficiency solar panels, the facility is projected to generate approximately 5,720,305 kWh of clean electricity each year. This output is sufficient to power an estimated 783 homes and will have a substantial environmental impact, displacing 8.81 million pounds of carbon emissions annually—equivalent to taking 951 gasoline-powered cars off the road.
Community Partnership and Grid Modernization
The Cotuit Solar Farm exemplifies a modern approach to energy development that delivers benefits beyond clean power. Through an innovative arrangement, PureSky Energy donated the land to the town and established a leaseback agreement, creating a new, stable revenue stream for the local community. Furthermore, a neighboring municipality is leveraging the project to offer its residents reduced-rate community solar credits, making renewable energy more affordable and accessible.
The integrated battery system is critical for grid modernization, allowing stored solar energy to be dispatched during periods of peak demand. This capability reduces strain on the grid, mitigates the risk of blackouts, and builds a more resilient and reliable energy supply for the region.

Expanding Massachusetts’ Clean Energy Footprint
This project marks another milestone in the company’s continued expansion in the U.S. market, which has grown to 233 MW of generation capacity across 44 sites since 2016. The Cotuit facility is part of a broader investment in the Commonwealth, which includes the development of the 6.5 MWdc Fort River Solar project in Amherst, set to feature a 3.5 MWh battery storage system.
Nicholas Topping, Vice President of Community Solar at PureSky Energy, highlighted the importance of local collaboration. “Partnerships with municipalities are fundamental to advancing the renewable energy transition and increasing the resilience of the grid through battery energy storage solutions,” he stated. “The town demonstrated exceptional leadership in quickly recognizing the value of community solar as an innovative way to support local renewable energy development and bring the benefits of solar to their residents.”
The Future of Accessible Solar
Projects like the Cotuit Solar Farm are pivotal in democratizing clean energy. The community solar model allows residents and businesses to subscribe to a share of a local solar project and receive credits on their electricity bills, eliminating the need for rooftop panel installations. This successful launch not only provides immediate cost savings and environmental benefits but also serves as a powerful testament to how collaborative energy projects can accelerate a sustainable future for Massachusetts.
