Policy Changes for Rooftop Solar Bangladesh
Bangladesh is set to relax net metering rules for rooftop solar to make installations easier and expand participation. Key changes in the draft amendment include removing the 70% cap on how much electricity rooftop solar users can send to the grid, allowing 100% of excess power to be transmitted. Additionally, the regulations will open net metering to single-phase and 220-volt users, not just three-phase or 33 kV consumers. Prepaid meter users will also be allowed to join the scheme, which will raise the allowable solar integration limit to 80% of transformer capacity, up from 70%. Furthermore, a 10% system maintenance charge will be introduced to be collected at final settlement.
Goals and Potential of Rooftop Solar Bangladesh
The policy change aims to support Bangladesh’s goal of achieving 40% of total electricity from renewable sources by 2041, according to energy ministry officials quoted by The Business Standard. One official indicated that rooftop solar on factory roofs could have very large potential, estimating around 5,000 MW from available rooftop space.
Implementation Timeline for Rooftop Solar Bangladesh
The revised net metering rules are expected to streamline the process for individuals and businesses considering solar installations, thereby enabling greater participation in renewable energy generation. The government aims to implement these changes swiftly to catalyze solar energy adoption across the country.
