Merseyside-based Shawton Energy has expanded its renewable energy portfolio through the strategic acquisition of a ready-to-build 8.6MW solar project in Pembrokeshire, South Wales. The company purchased the fully-approved site from One Planet Developments, setting the stage for imminent construction.
Once completed later this year, the solar farm will feature over 14,000 solar panels capable of generating enough clean electricity to power approximately 2,500 homes annually. The project is also projected to displace more than 2,000 tonnes of carbon emissions each year, contributing significantly to regional and national decarbonisation efforts.
Jamie Shaw, CEO of Shawton Energy, described the deal as a “major milestone” for the company. “The acquisition of this ready-to-build asset from One Planet will support our corporate and industrial clients in their cost reduction and environmental programmes,” he stated. The project addresses a growing demand from UK businesses for accessible, long-term renewable energy solutions, particularly for those without sufficient space for on-site installations.
This Pembrokeshire development marks a strategic evolution for Shawton Energy, which has dedicated nearly a decade to building its on-site generation Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) portfolio. “This is an exciting opportunity to further build, strengthen and diversify our existing solar portfolio,” Shaw added, emphasizing the firm’s dedication to expanding its small-scale distributed energy infrastructure.
The move has garnered support from key partners. Robert Wall, Head of Sustainable Private Infrastructure at Lazard Asset Management, commented, “We are committed to supporting the development of local, distributed and sustainable energy, and we are pleased to be further supporting Shawton Energy in its continued growth and local investments.” Wall highlighted that the Welsh project will provide UK businesses with the low-cost energy necessary for growth amid rising electricity demand.
One Planet Developments, which guided the project from conception to its construction-ready status, expressed satisfaction with the handover. “Having developed the site from scratch through to ready-to-build stage, we look forward to seeing Shawton Energy build, own and operate it,” said James Stoney, Business Development Director at One Planet.
This latest acquisition reinforces the critical role that targeted investments in solar projects play in advancing the UK’s transition to a green economy. By providing secure, decarbonised energy, the Pembrokeshire solar farm will help businesses meet sustainability targets while reducing their dependence on fossil fuels.
