In a significant development for corporate sustainability, Solar Americas Capital and Ambev have announced a new large-scale behind-the-meter solar power plant is now operational in Brazil. Located next to Ambev’s factory in Cachoeiras do Macacu, Rio de Janeiro, the 5 MW solar plant features approximately 9,000 solar panels and will directly power the beverage company’s operations.
Behind-the-Meter Solar Powers AB InBev
The behind-the-meter solution allows the solar installation to produce energy and supply it directly to the consumer, bypassing the distribution network.
“One of the key benefits of this behind-the-meter deployment is the direct link between energy generation and consumption, which ensures that AMBEV has access to 100% certifiable and renewable energy while also benefiting from lower costs by eliminating the need for the transmission and distribution network,” said Christian Ferrari, Strategic Sourcing AB InBev.
“We are happy to see the results and partner with Solar Americas in this long-term strategic project,” he added.
Solar Plant to Generate 7,000 MWh Annually
The solar plant is expected to generate nearly 7,000 MWh of clean energy annually, which is enough to power 3,000 homes. This significant output has a direct environmental benefit. According to the Brazilian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, each MWh of solar power in Brazil prevents over 300 kg of CO2 emissions. Consequently, the new Ambev solar installation will prevent more than 2,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions each year—an impact comparable to planting over 100,000 trees.

“The project demonstrates Ambev’s commitment to environmental protection and innovation. We are proud to be selected to work with such a great team at Ambev,” said Tiago Alves, Co-Founder and Commercial Director of Solar Americas.
Renewable Energy Boosts Energy Transition
The growing demand for renewable energy from commercial and industrial companies is a crucial driver of the energy transition, leading to positive environmental, social, and governance outcomes. Distributed and on-site renewable energy generation enhances the efficiency of the energy network and helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Solar photovoltaics offer a solution to the energy trilemma by providing security, affordability, and accessibility.
“Solar Americas co-funds, identifies, builds, and manages solar assets for commercial and industrial partners, drawing on more than 25 years of experience in the UK and Brazilian solar and finance markets. The launch of the Cachoeiras do Macacu solar plant marks a major step forward for Solar Americas, and we remain committed to providing affordable, clean, and renewable energy solutions to our customers around the world,” said Jose Tenorio, Co-Founder and Financial Director of Solar Americas.
