Somalia Renewable Energy Initiative
Somalia has announced new measures to de-risk renewable energy investment, focusing on a digital monitoring platform for mini-grids developed by the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources in collaboration with UNDP Somalia under the Africa Mini-Grids Program (AMP). This initiative aims to improve the transparency of system performance, energy production and consumption, and financial indicators, thereby making renewable projects more bankable.
According to a report from UNDP Somalia, a De-risking Renewable Energy Investment (DREI) analysis identified an estimated 138.7 MWp of targeted solar PV capacity in the nation. The platform is designed to support standardized monitoring through the AMP Quality Assurance and Monitoring Framework, which is intended to enhance reliability for investors and operators.
The government’s efforts address historical information gaps and perceived risks that have hindered private capital investment in mini-grids and other decentralized clean-energy projects. By improving data availability and system monitoring, Somalia aims to foster a more attractive investment environment for renewable energy initiatives.
This move aligns with Somalia’s broader goals outlined in its National Transformation Plan for 2025-2029 and Vision 2060, which seek to attract investment across energy, agriculture, and other sectors.
