How Summit-Friendship Solar Village Wins Reuters Global Energy Transition Award
In a significant recognition of its transformative impact, the Summit-Friendship Solar Village project has secured a prestigious victory at the Reuters Global Energy Transition Awards 2024. The initiative was named a winner in the “Projects of Impact” category during a ceremony held on June 25 at 95 Wall Street in New York, distinguishing itself from a pool of 500 global entries.
A Lifeline of Power for Off-Grid Bangladesh
Located on the remote sedimentary island of Kabilpur Char in Bangladesh’s Gaibandha district, the project is a powerful demonstration of renewable energy’s potential to uplift underserved populations. At its core is a 57.6-kilowatt scalable solar microgrid, which provides a critical energy lifeline to 3,000 residents and benefits neighboring islands along the Brahmaputra River—areas where extending the national grid is unfeasible.
The collaboration between Summit Power International and the NGO Friendship has been instrumental. Muhammed Aziz Khan, Chairman of Summit Power International, affirmed his company’s vision: “Summit wants to serve 100 percent of Bangladesh with infrastructures for electricity and communication. Some ‘char’ areas, which are outside the national grid, also deserve electricity.”

By enabling small businesses to operate, farms to irrigate, and creating local jobs in solar system maintenance, the initiative delivers economic empowerment alongside electricity. This model proves the viability of decentralized solar power systems as a tool for sustainable development.
