French energy major TotalEnergies has significantly expanded its renewable energy footprint in the United States, bringing two large-scale solar projects online in southeast Texas. The newly operational facilities, Danish Fields and Cottonwood, have a combined generation capacity of 1.2 GW and feature integrated battery storage, marking a major milestone for the company’s U.S. portfolio.
TotalEnergies Launches 1.2 GW Solar Farms in Texas: Powering the ERCOT Market
The larger of the two sites is the 720 MW Danish Fields project, now TotalEnergies’ biggest U.S. solar farm. It is complemented by the 455 MW Cottonwood solar farm. According to company announcements, both facilities are co-located with 225 MWh battery energy storage systems (BESS) supplied by TotalEnergies’ subsidiary, Saft. While the battery system at Danish Fields is now in commercial operation, the BESS at Cottonwood is scheduled for commissioning in 2025.
These new assets bring the company’s portfolio of renewable projects operating or under construction in Texas to 4 GW, demonstrating a substantial investment in the state’s rapidly growing power market, which is primarily managed by the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT).
A Dual Strategy for Decarbonization with TotalEnergies’ Texas Solar Farms
The power generated from these facilities is already allocated through a combination of corporate power purchase agreements (PPAs) and internal use. Seventy percent of the capacity from Danish Fields is contracted to corporate clients, including Saint-Gobain. The remaining 30% is earmarked to help decarbonize TotalEnergies’ own industrial sites along the U.S. Gulf Coast, specifically its facilities in Port Arthur and La Porte, Texas, and Carville, Louisiana. Power from the Cottonwood project is also fully contracted under long-term PPAs with industrial giants LyondellBasell and Saint-Gobain.

“The start-ups of Danish Fields and Cottonwood in the fast-growing Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) market showcase TotalEnergies’ ability to deliver competitive renewable electricity to support our clients’ decarbonisation goals, as well as our own,” noted Olivier Jouny, Senior Vice President of Renewables at TotalEnergies.
Powering Ambitious U.S. and Global Growth After TotalEnergies Launches 1.2 GW Solar Farms in Texas
The commissioning of these projects aligns with a massive expansion of solar energy in Texas. The Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) projects the state will add over 50 GW of new solar capacity in the next five years, more than any other state. TotalEnergies is positioning itself to be a key player in this growth, aiming to expand its U.S. operating portfolio to 10 GW by the end of 2025.
This American expansion is a critical component of the company’s global integrated power strategy. The U.S. target represents nearly a third of its worldwide goal to reach 35 GW in renewable power generation by 2025, complementing its growing international portfolio of solar projects, which includes a recently announced 1 GW portfolio in India.
