EU-Funded Project Concludes: Impact on Uzbekistan green energy
After four years of dedicated effort to advance a more sustainable energy sector in Central Asia, the EU-funded Sustainable Energy Connectivity in Central Asia (SECCA) project has officially concluded its activities. The project’s completion was marked by a closing roundtable held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, on February 18, 2026, which brought together key stakeholders to review the significant results achieved.
Project Scope and Duration: Uzbekistan green energy Focus
Running from March 2022 to May 2026, the SECCA project was instrumental in providing targeted technical assistance, strategic policy advice, and extensive capacity-building support. The core mission was to help foster a more sustainable and reliable energy mix throughout the region, with a particular focus on Uzbekistan.
Key Achievements in Uzbekistan green energy
The roundtable highlighted several major accomplishments that underscore the project’s impact on Uzbekistan’s green transition. Key outcomes include:
- Enhanced Energy Efficiency in Buildings: SECCA successfully strengthened the legal and regulatory framework for energy efficiency. It also supported the development of mechanisms to stimulate the market for energy service companies (ESCOs), paving the way for more energy-efficient infrastructure.
- Strengthened Energy Governance: The project bolstered institutional capacities for strategic energy planning and data-driven decision-making. A key initiative was the development of a regional energy modelling system to improve forecasting and policy formulation.
- Promotion of Renewable Energy: A comprehensive assessment of the technical potential for rooftop solar projects was conducted, providing valuable data to guide future investments in solar power.
- Advanced Research Cooperation: SECCA played a vital role in improving regional research collaboration, specifically to advance Uzbekistan’s participation in the EU’s prestigious Horizon Europe research and innovation programme.
- Increased Public Awareness: Through a series of successful EU Sustainable Energy Days campaigns, competitions, and educational activities involving schools and universities, the project significantly raised public awareness about the benefits of sustainable energy.
The Path Forward for Uzbekistan green energy
The closing event was not just a reflection on past successes but also a look toward the future. Representatives from Uzbekistan’s Agency for Strategic Development and Reforms, the EU Delegation, financial institutions, and private sector partners gathered to discuss priorities for continued cooperation.
Sven Ernedal, Programme Manager of EU4SustainableCentralAsia, presented a roadmap for ongoing and planned activities, assuring stakeholders of the EU’s continued commitment to supporting the region’s energy goals beyond the SECCA project. This ongoing partnership aims to build on the solid foundation laid by SECCA and further accelerate Central Asia’s journey towards a secure and sustainable energy future.
