From October 28-30, 2025, the global energy community will turn its focus to Skopje, as North Macedonia hosts the 14th International Forum on Energy for Sustainable Development (IFESD), widely recognized as the World Energy Forum. This landmark event positions the Western Balkan nation as a burgeoning leader in the green transition. Organized under the theme “From Goals to Action: Powering the Future with Sustainable Energy,” the forum aims to translate ambitious climate objectives into concrete strategies for a secure and equitable energy future.
The summit is a significant international collaboration, hosted by the Government of North Macedonia and co-organized by its Ministry of Energy, Mining and Mineral Resources, alongside UNDP North Macedonia and the five UN Regional Commissions (UNECE, UNESCAP, UNECLAC, UNECA, and UNESCWA). This powerful coalition will guide discussions on critical topics including energy connectivity, international cooperation, and ensuring a just transition. The agenda is designed to align with global commitments like the 2030 Agenda and the Paris Agreement, focusing on actionable steps to accelerate progress.
The choice of Skopje is a testament to the Western Balkans’ growing role in Europe’s renewable energy landscape. North Macedonia has seen a massive influx of applications for new clean energy projects, including thousands of megawatts of proposed wind and solar capacity alongside vital battery storage systems. This regional momentum reflects the broader trends in solar adoption seen in the latest global solar market analysis. For Europe, the development of a green energy hub in the Balkans is crucial for grid stability and achieving long-term energy security.
Discussions at the forum will extend beyond policy to the practicalities of building a resilient renewable energy sector. A key focus will be on developing local and regional supply chains to reduce reliance on volatile international markets. This requires a deep understanding of the foundations of solar manufacturing, from the detailed production sequence to the strategic sourcing of essential raw materials. Furthermore, advancing domestic production capabilities involves significant capital investment, making conversations around the sophisticated equipment needed for manufacturing and a thorough breakdown of plant establishment costs essential for investors and policymakers.
The World Energy Forum 2025 is more than a diplomatic gathering; it is a catalyst for tangible change. It provides North Macedonia and the wider Western Balkans with a premier platform to showcase their commitment and attract investment, while offering world leaders a venue to forge the partnerships needed to power a sustainable global future. For professionals and enthusiasts eager to grasp the technologies underpinning this shift, educational resources such as a complimentary e-course on solar power can provide a valuable foundation.
