Bechtel’s Role in the Impressive Texas solar project: Bechtel Lands 2024 Deal
Global engineering and construction leader Bechtel has secured a significant engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract from Doral Renewables to build the Cold Creek Solar Project. Spanning Schleicher and Tom Green counties, this large-scale facility will bolster the Texas energy grid with 430 megawatts (MW) of solar power and an integrated 340-megawatt-hour (MWh) battery energy storage system (BESS).
The project, which solidifies the ongoing partnership between Bechtel and Doral Renewables following their collaboration on the Mammoth Solar project in Indiana, is slated to enter commercial operation in 2028. Engineering work commenced shortly after the deal was finalized in late 2025.
Advanced Technology for a Resilient Grid
At the heart of the Cold Creek project are over 850,000 solar modules, each produced through a detailed solar panel manufacturing process. The co-located 340 MWh BESS is a critical component designed to enhance grid stability, storing solar energy to dispatch power to the ERCOT grid during periods of peak demand or intermittency. This integration of generation and storage mirrors the efficiency gains seen in other hybrid systems, like co-located renewable projects, which aim to deliver a more consistent and reliable supply of clean energy.
Bolstering Texas’s Renewable Energy Leadership
The Cold Creek facility represents a major addition to the state’s clean energy portfolio, joining other ambitious ventures such as Vesper Energy’s 600MW Hornet Solar Project in cementing Texas’s position as a national leader in renewable power. The construction phase is expected to create up to 500 jobs, providing a significant economic stimulus for the region. Once operational, the plant will generate enough carbon-free electricity to power tens of thousands of homes, contributing to a substantial reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
For Bechtel, this marks its fifth major solar project in Texas, underscoring the company’s deep expertise and continued investment in the state’s energy transition. As Texas continues to build a more resilient and sustainable power infrastructure, landmark projects like Cold Creek are essential.
