Michigan-Based CMS Energy (CMS) Arm to Construct Large-Scale Solar Project

In a significant step for Michigan’s renewable energy landscape, Consumers Energy, the principal subsidiary of CMS Energy Corporation, has brought its largest solar project to fruition through a collaboration with the Muskegon County Resource Recovery Center. The initiative marks a major milestone in the state’s transition to clean power.

Project Scope and Impact

The Muskegon Solar Energy Center, a sprawling 250-megawatt facility, is situated on approximately 1,900 acres of land in Moorland Township. Following the start of construction in April 2024, the plant is now operational and generating enough clean electricity to power an estimated 40,000 homes and businesses. This substantial generating capacity is a cornerstone of Consumers Energy’s aggressive clean energy strategy.

Strategic Partnership and Clean Energy Goals

This project is a key component of the utility’s ambitious plan to add 8,000 megawatts of solar energy by 2040 and become completely coal-free by 2025. According to David Hicks, vice president of clean energy development at Consumers Energy, partnerships like the one with Muskegon County are critical to achieving these industry-leading goals. Under the agreement, Consumers Energy owns and operates the solar arrays, while Muskegon County, Moorland Township, and the MCRRC own the property and benefit from consistent lease payments. This model aligns with the state’s MI Healthy Climate Plan, which prioritizes the shift to renewable energy sources.

A Catalyst for Michigan’s Green Economy

The Muskegon project is part of a broader push by Consumers Energy, which is also advancing other solar developments, including one near a former coal plant in Bay City. This transition is bolstering Michigan’s economy, supported by federal initiatives like the Inflation Reduction Act. In just one year, the state has seen the creation of over 15,500 new clean energy jobs, with projections nearing 167,000 more over the next decade. As spokesperson Tracy Wimmer noted, the increasing reliance on solar, a free energy source, is expected to lower customer bills over the long term, making the transition both environmentally and economically beneficial for Michiganders.
