Agreements Signed for the Oman Solar Project in Paris
Oman has signed three agreements with France’s EDF Power Solutions to develop the 500 MW Al Kamil Solar PV Independent Power Project (IPP) alongside a 2 GW pumped hydro storage facility and a digital infrastructure initiative. The agreements were signed in Paris during a high-level visit by Sultan Haitham bin Tarik and French President Emmanuel Macron, marking a commitment to enhance economic and energy cooperation between the two nations.
Oman Solar Project Details
The 500 MW Al Kamil Solar PV IPP will be financed, constructed, and operated by a consortium that includes EDF Power Solutions, Oman National Engineering and Investment Co (ONEIC), and OQ Alternative Energy (OQAE), with the support of the Oman Power and Water Procurement Company. This project represents an investment exceeding $260 million and aims to bolster the share of renewable energy in Oman’s electricity mix, in line with the country’s clean energy transition and Oman Vision 2040 objectives.
Oman Solar Project Implementation Timeline
As a standardized technology, the Al Kamil Solar IPP is expected to reach financial close and commence construction within 18 to 24 months, significantly ahead of the timeline for the pumped hydro project. This marks EDF Power Solutions’ third renewable energy venture in Oman, following previous projects including the 500 MW Manah1 Solar PV IPP and the 120 MW JBB Wind IPP.
