Affordable Solar Launches Cuidando Los Niños Solar Project

In a major step for clean energy in New Mexico, Affordable Solar has begun construction on the state’s first community solar project—the Cuidando Los Niños Community Solar Project in Valencia County. The project is designed to expand access to renewable energy, benefiting local residents and strengthening the state’s commitment to sustainability.

A Milestone in Renewable Energy

The project is a collaboration between Affordable Solar and Gridworks, an Albuquerque-based engineering, procurement, and construction firm. It is named in honour of Cuidando Los Niños, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting homeless children and families.

This initiative builds on the Community Solar Act (SB84), passed in April 2021. The law allows electric utility customers to subscribe to renewable energy facilities under 5 megawatts (MW) and offset their monthly electricity bills with credits. This approach makes solar energy accessible to individuals, businesses, and non-profits that cannot install their own solar systems.

Affordable Solar has also pledged financial support to Cuidando Los Niños, making an initial donation when the project was awarded. A larger contribution will follow once the project is completed in early summer 2025.

This project is part of a growing trend of community solar initiatives across the United States, which provide clean energy access to people who cannot install rooftop solar panels. The approach supports the wider adoption of renewable energy in urban and rural communities alike.

Strengthening Community Partnerships

A key aspect of this solar project is its focus on social equity. Half of the project’s energy output is reserved to help lower electricity costs for qualified low-income residents, ensuring that more people can benefit from clean energy regardless of their income level.

Dylan Connelly, Project Developer at Affordable Solar, emphasized the project’s significance. “After nearly four years of hard work, we are excited to begin construction on this historic project. This effort reflects our commitment to clean energy and our dedication to supporting local communities.”

In total, Affordable Solar has secured seven community solar projects with a combined capacity of 35 MW. These projects will offset the energy consumption of about 15,000 homes, significantly contributing to New Mexico’s clean energy portfolio.

Commitment to Clean Energy

With a strong track record of delivering high-quality renewable energy projects, Affordable Solar remains focused on innovation and community partnerships. The Cuidando Los Niños Community Solar Project continues the company’s push for a sustainable future.

Gridworks, the project’s engineering and construction partner, is a key player in renewable energy development, having installed over 1.9 GW of renewable energy across the United States. Its expertise will ensure the solar project is completed efficiently and successfully.

As states embrace clean energy policies, community solar is expanding across the country. Projects like this demonstrate the potential for renewable energy to benefit entire communities. By providing solar access to renters, low-income households, and small businesses, these initiatives are making renewable energy more inclusive.

The Cuidando Los Niños Community Solar Project is poised to set an example for future developments in New Mexico. As the state moves toward a cleaner energy grid, such projects will be crucial for lowering carbon emissions and reducing dependence on fossil fuels.

The launch of New Mexico’s first community solar project marks a significant milestone. Through this initiative, Affordable Solar and its partners are paving the way for broader clean energy adoption, making solar energy more accessible while providing economic relief to low-income residents. With continued investment in community solar, New Mexico is on track to become a leader in renewable energy.
