Ecoprogetti Boosts PV Production in Morocco to 1 GW

Italian solar equipment manufacturer Ecoprogetti has successfully completed a major expansion of a solar module facility in Morocco, elevating its annual capacity to 1 GW and establishing it as the largest plant of its kind in North Africa. The upgraded production line, located in the northern city of Al Hoceima and operated by Almaden Morocco, represents a significant leap forward for the region’s renewable energy manufacturing capabilities.

This achievement doubles the facility’s previous 500 MW output. The enhancement was made possible by integrating cutting-edge technology into the PV production process. The line now utilizes advanced tunnel oxide passivated contact (TOPCon) G12 18BB half-cut cells. These high-performance cells are assembled in a durable glass-glass module configuration, designed to maximize efficiency and ensure a superior quality final product capable of meeting the rigorous demands of both African and global solar markets.

The upgraded facility not only solidifies Morocco’s status as a key player in sustainable energy but also transforms it into a central hub for photovoltaic manufacturing. By leveraging the nation’s abundant solar resources, the Al Hoceima plant is strategically positioned to supply high-efficiency solar modules to accelerate the energy transition across the continent and beyond, aligning with Africa’s broader goals to combat energy shortages and reduce carbon emissions.

This project is part of Ecoprogetti’s wider commitment to fostering solar industry growth across Africa. The company has also been instrumental in developing other key projects, including the installation of a 150 MW fully automated production line for LPV Technologies in Nigeria. That facility, the first of its kind in the country, is capable of producing over 317,000 solar panels annually. Ecoprogetti’s work extends globally, with recent completions of production lines in Oman and India, showcasing a consistent drive to support worldwide solar development.

The collaboration between Ecoprogetti and Almaden Morocco, which began in 2018, underscores the power of international partnerships in advancing renewable technology. The successful scaling of the Al Hoceima plant sets a new benchmark for solar manufacturing in the region and reinforces the critical role of innovation in the global growth of PV production, paving the way for a more sustainable energy future.
