Egypt renewable energy projects to reach 2 GW capacity by 2026

Current Renewable Energy Projects in Egypt

Egypt and Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar) are advancing a series of renewable energy projects, which prominently feature wind, solar, and battery storage technologies. This acceleration is geared towards quicker grid connections and efficient project execution, focusing on several key areas including the Gulf of Suez, Ras Ghareb, Minya, and Benban.

Details of the ongoing projects include a wind project in the Gulf of Suez that is scheduled to connect to the national grid by December 2026. The Masdar-led consortium is also undertaking a 2 GW green program in the Suez Canal Economic Zone, originally signed in November 2022. This program encompasses a 1,000 MW wind project in Ras Ghareb, a 1,000 MW solar project in Minya, and a 600 MWh battery storage system, all aimed at enhancing energy reliability in the region.

Upcoming Egypt Renewable Energy Project Timeline

In addition to these substantial projects, a 200 MW solar project in Benban, accompanied by 120 MWh of battery storage, is expected to be operational by the end of 2026. The broader aim is to enhance Egypt’s renewable energy generation to meet the national targets.

Investment in Egypt Renewable Energy Infrastructure

A recent report states that Egypt is pushing for localization in renewable energy manufacturing and storage, including plans for a battery factory within the Suez Canal Economic Zone, which is connected to broader investments from Chinese entities. This initiative is part of Egypt’s strategy to expand its clean energy infrastructure and strengthen supply chains.

Government Support for Egypt Renewable Energy Initiatives

Egyptian authorities, including Electricity and Renewable Energy Minister Mahmoud Esmat, have expressed commitment to strengthening cooperation with Masdar for the timely execution of these projects. This collaborative effort is underscored by a mutual recognition of the importance of increasing renewable energy capacity, as Egypt aims to boost the share of renewables in its energy mix.

Conclusion on Egypt Renewable Energy Developments

With a clear focus on renewable energy advancements, Egypt is positioning itself as a key player in the global energy transition, aligning its infrastructure development with sustainable practices and international collaborations.
