Hedley Planning Services has successfully obtained approval for an innovative renewable energy project on the Isle of Man, marking a significant step for the island’s green energy ambitions. The project will feature the installation of the island’s very first pole-mounted photovoltaic trackers.
Located on a 0.49-hectare site near Ballasalla, the development will consist of three advanced trackers, each holding 36 individual solar panels. This brings the total to 108 photovoltaic modules, which are projected to generate enough clean electricity to power approximately 25 homes annually. This installation represents a key expansion for the North East-based planning firm beyond its usual region.
A unique aspect of this project is its dual-purpose design. The clean energy generated will primarily power an adjacent data centre. This centre will, in turn, collect and display performance data from the trackers for educational purposes, providing valuable insights into solar energy generation for the community.
The use of tracking technology is a notable advancement for the Isle of Man. Unlike fixed installations, these trackers follow the sun’s path across the sky throughout the day. This dynamic positioning significantly increases the amount of sunlight captured, thereby maximizing the PV panel output and overall system efficiency.

Joe Ridgeon, a director at Hedley Planning who managed the application, expressed his satisfaction with the approval. “We are delighted to eventually secure planning permission for this exciting project and very much look forward to seeing the plans come to fruition,” he stated, underscoring the value of solar farms in providing clean power to local properties and the wider community.
This development aligns with the Isle of Man’s broader goals of achieving greater energy independence and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. By harnessing the power of the sun with efficient PV panels, the project is a concrete step towards a more sustainable future. It is anticipated that this pioneering installation will encourage further investment in renewable energy infrastructure across the island.
