RWE Clean Energy has significantly bolstered its American renewable energy pipeline, acquiring a 599-megawatt portfolio of three development-stage solar and battery storage projects from Galehead Development. The deal marks a strategic entry into the Pacific Northwest for the German utility’s U.S. subsidiary while also deepening its existing footprint in New York.
Expanding into the Pacific Northwest and New York
The acquisition encompasses two key assets in the PacifiCorp region, designed to meet rising energy demands and enhance grid stability. The largest of these is the Cedar Ridge project in Blaine County, Idaho, a hybrid facility combining a 300 MW solar PV array with a 150 MW/600 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS). In neighboring Marion County, Oregon, RWE has acquired the Remington project, a 199 MW/796 MWh standalone BESS. Both projects are poised to support PacifiCorp’s goal of adding 20 GW of renewable capacity by 2032.
“RWE is thrilled to complete our first acquisitions with Galehead, especially the Remington and Cedar Ridge projects, which enable us to expand our presence in the Pacific Northwest market where there is a strong demand for affordable, clean energy,” said Hanson Wood, Head of Development for Utility-Scale Renewables at RWE Clean Energy.
Rounding out the portfolio is the 100 MW Champlain Solar Project in Washington County, New York. This mid-stage development asset is strategically positioned to supply clean power to the NYISO market, reinforcing RWE’s commitment to the state’s clean energy transition.
A Key Component of an Ambitious U.S. Strategy
This multi-state deal is a tactical move within RWE’s larger plan for aggressive growth in the United States. As the nation’s fourth-largest renewable energy company, RWE Clean Energy currently operates a portfolio of over 9 GW in onshore wind, solar, and battery storage, supported by a team of 2,000 employees. The company maintains a massive development pipeline of 36 GW and aims to more than double its installed U.S. capacity to over 19 GW.
This expansion has been significantly accelerated by the company’s transformative acquisition of Con Edison’s clean energy business in March 2023. Globally, RWE is investing heavily in green technology, with a goal to expand its capacity to over 65 GW by 2030. As part of its €55 billion investment strategy through 2030, the company has earmarked €20 billion specifically for the U.S. market, underscoring the region’s central role in its future.
