SATO solar housing expands solar energy initiatives in Finland
SATO, a leading rental housing provider in Finland and a part of the Lumo Group, is significantly expanding its solar energy initiatives by installing solar power systems at 35 properties across the Helsinki Metropolitan Area and Turku. The company aims to reach 50 solar-powered properties by the end of the year.
SATO solar housing delivers solar energy to nearly 2,000 homes
SATO has installed solar power systems at 35 properties, providing solar energy to nearly 2,000 homes. These systems will generate approximately 1,000 MWh of solar electricity annually, equivalent to the yearly energy consumption of around 500 one-bedroom apartments.
The solar energy generated will primarily be used to power heating systems, ventilation, and general lighting in shared areas of each building. Any surplus electricity produced will be fed into the national grid.
SATO solar housing strengthens commitment to carbon neutrality
SATO has installed solar panels on 15 properties in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area and Turku as part of its environmental sustainability initiatives. The company aims to achieve carbon neutrality in energy consumption in its rental buildings and offices by 2030.
\”The benefits of solar power include emission-free energy generation and a reduction in the carbon footprint of a property. Solar power also improves the security of supply and contributes to the national electricity system. For example, in the summer, the amount of solar electricity fed into the national grid is at its highest when the electricity demand is at its peak due to increased use of air conditioning. This reduces the need to use more polluting forms of electricity production such as coal and peat,\” said Jani Nieminen, President and CEO of SATO.

Electric vehicle charging integrated with SATO solar housing energy systems
In addition to expanding its use of solar power, SATO is also focusing on increasing electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at its properties. The company plans to install EV charging stations at 15 properties this year, followed by another 15 next year.
\”Both solar power and electric vehicle charging are important parts of our sustainability work. The charging stations will be connected to the properties’ solar power systems, which will help to reduce the carbon footprint of the electric vehicles charged at SATO properties and thus support Finland’s goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2035. We want to make it easy for our residents to make sustainable choices,\” Nieminen said.
SATO’s expansion of solar power and EV charging stations is a key part of its commitment to sustainability and carbon neutrality. By the end of the year, the company aims to have solar panels installed at 50 properties and plans to continue expanding its solar initiatives in the coming years, contributing to a more sustainable future.
