Solar Projects Yemen 2026: 120 MW Expansion Plans Underway

Yemen’s Solar Projects

In 2026, Yemen is accelerating its solar energy projects through a combination of utility-scale plants, humanitarian initiatives, and decentralized systems to address urgent electricity needs. Earlier this year, a 120 MW solar power station was inaugurated in the city of Aden, with plans to expand by an additional 120 MW, funded by Emirati partners.

In Taiz, multiple solar facilities are under construction, including installations for the Al-Turba branch of Taiz University as well as Al Khowkha Central Hospital. This initiative is part of a broader aim to enhance electricity access in areas beyond major urban centers.

Additional solar projects are underway in the Shabwa and Lahj governorates, further extending the reach of renewable energy in Yemen. Solar initiatives are also being deployed in agriculture, focusing on irrigation and water supply, including World Bank-supported solar-powered irrigation systems.

Healthcare services are benefitting from solar power projects as well, with UNICEF promoting solar energy systems for vaccine storage facilities in Marib. Furthermore, a residential complex consisting of 232 solar-powered homes and public facilities has been established in Hajjah as part of a Saudi-funded humanitarian project.

Yemen’s commitment to renewable energy includes its pursuit of membership in the International Solar Alliance, with government officials expressing intent to transition towards solar power. Nevertheless, the execution of these projects faces challenges such as political fragmentation, financing limitations, security issues, and operational disruptions. Reports indicate issues with the sudden shutdown of several solar facilities in Aden and Shabwa, raising concerns about the reliability and continuity of renewable energy infrastructure.
