Uzbekistan Energy Storage Plans for 4.3 GW Expansion
Uzbekistan aims to develop 4.3 GW of energy-storage capacity as part of its initiative to expand renewable energy generation. The initiative, supported by the Eurasian Development Bank, highlights the country’s commitment to enhancing its energy infrastructure amid rising electricity demand.
The energy storage deployment is intended to balance solar and wind power, whose output fluctuates based on the time of day and weather conditions. This strategy aims to improve grid stability, mitigate electricity shortages, and support Uzbekistan’s goal of achieving 25 GW of installed renewable capacity by 2030.
Uzbekistan Energy Storage and Supporting Infrastructure Developments
In addition to energy storage, Uzbekistan plans to modernize and digitalize 60 substations as part of its broader power sector expansion. The initiatives are designed to connect at least 3.3 GW of additional renewable capacity by 2031 and reduce annual losses at upgraded substations by approximately 20,000 MWh.
Uzbekistan Energy Storage Growth in Response to Energy Demand
The plans come in response to sharply rising electricity demand in the region. Central Asia is projected to see a 27% increase in electricity consumption by 2030, while Uzbekistan anticipates domestic demand reaching 117 billion kWh by that year.
With significant investment in renewable energy and supporting infrastructure, Uzbekistan’s energy strategy reflects its goals of achieving energy self-sufficiency and enhancing regional electricity trade. The move towards increased energy storage capacity is expected to facilitate a more stable and reliable electricity supply as the country transitions to a greener energy framework.
