Program Overview
Bangladesh is expanding its rooftop solar program with a target of 35,000 MW of total clean energy capacity by 2030, aiming to utilize urban rooftops as power generation sites and reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels. This government-backed initiative will install solar panels across government buildings, commercial properties, and urban infrastructures, effectively increasing the generating capacity without requiring new land.
The strategy includes various financial incentives and policy support, aiming for renewable energy to meet 20% of the country’s electricity demand by 2030. Long-term projections for 2050 show a target for clean energy to comprise between 30% and 50% of the national power mix.
Economic Incentives and Policy Goals
Key elements of the strategy include:
Ready to make big Profits?
The solar Industry is Booming
WE HELP NEWCOMERS to the solar industry start their own solar module production line. Customers can make BIG PROFITS by selling modules and finding investors, without wasting money and time on things they don't need!
- Zero percent tax rate for the solar sector extended until 2035.
- Rebates on electricity bills for consumers generating their own power.
- Projected investment recovery within 3.5 years and potential annual earnings of up to 1.5 million BDT ($12,200).
As of now, Bangladesh has achieved 35 MW of new capacity through rooftop solar initiatives and net metering, moving steadily toward its 2030 aims. Officials indicate that further developments are necessary to manage growth effectively.
National Energy Storage Roadmap
Complementing the rooftop solar efforts, the government of Bangladesh is also pursuing a National Energy Storage Roadmap to enhance the grid’s stability and accommodate the growing share of intermittent renewable energy sources. These enhancements aim to ensure a reliable electricity supply as demand continues to rise.
Challenges and Future Outlook
Despite the ambitious plans, challenges remain, including concerns over land scarcity and lapses in policy implementation. Some experts recommend a more attainable interim target of 12-14% renewable electricity by 2030, representing an installed capacity of approximately 3,500-4,000 MW. The government aims for a renewable energy capacity range of 6,000 MW to 16,000 MW by 2030, but broader clean energy ambitions are encapsulated in the higher 35,000 MW target.
